Bio.
Born in Kirkcaldy,Scotland in 1963,Rosslyn Duncan was educated at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art,Dundee,Scotland, where she studied design and jewellery techniques. During her time at art college she studied with Dorothy Hogg OBE,who later became the Head of Jewellery Department at Edinburgh School of Art. These formative years were important as Duncan developed a specialization in the ancient Japanese technique of cloisonné enameling on precious metals, using gold and silver foils.Aberdeen Art Gallery supported the young designer after she left college with a solo show of her work and the title of Craft Master for her abilities in design and manufacture of a rare artifact. She has several pieces in Aberdeen Art Galleries collection,Highland Craftpoint and The National Theatre in London.
In 2001, Duncan relocated with her family to Houston ,Texas and is currently living there to this day.It is here she began to re-discover her love of the human figure and especially anatomy. She began to study with prolific realist artists to improve her painting skills and research mediums etc. Her painting style is more attached to the European’ Tachism’ style as she prefers to paint loosely, creating distinct brush marks left on the canvas in a wet -on-wet manner.
Her art is characterized by a sense of history and of time. The qualities of light on the form produces powerful, expressive portraits, that command the viewer to absorb their energy. She is a great admirer of the Slade School Artists,Rembrandt’s genius, Egon Schiele and the Viennese Expressionists.
Duncan’s art awards are numerous throughout Europe and USA.She was awarded first place for painting in the London Biennale in Chelsea in 2013, and has had her work exhibited in a rare exhibition in The Vatican. Her cadaver drawings are collected in London and she has taught and lectured to medical students on art and drawing anatomy.
